The Center for Community Safety (CCS) academic internships are designed to be preparatory experiences for working in the field after graduation and are intended to:
- Place the student in practice settings for research and/or project-based experience;
- Engage the student in group supervision and reflection which both examines professional matters that arise in practice and problem-solves around executing projects and research in diverse organizational settings; and
- Develop student awareness of and ability to apply standards for ethical research and professional practice. Primary responsibility for student supervision rests with the community partner supervisor.
Established in 2009, the CCS Academic Internship Program is a partnership between WSSU, students, and the community that offers students an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and analytical skills in diverse professional settings while earning academic credit. We help students develop into “citizen-scholars” by offering opportunities to integrate academic theory and ‘real world' practice, engage in research that explores the relationship between the two, and gain develop the professional skills needed for career success.
CCS internships are about more than work experience; they are about facilitating opportunities that allow for academic, personal and professional growth. Approximately 100 students, across a wide variety of academic disciplines, enroll in the Academic Internship Program each year.
The CCS Academic Internship Program is campus-wide and administered by the Center of Community Safety, which receives participating companies' internship requirements, reviews student records and verifies academic qualifications, and forwards applications to internship employers.
